Students’ Testimonials

💬

“I feel like this program made me feel actually apart of UBC aside from just classes.”

💬

“It was nice to hear from the experience of someone who shares similar stigmatized identities from a field that I would like to pursue.”

💬

“Moral support is undervalued, and BUDR is grounded in moral support, so I think it’s a hidden gem here at UBC.”

💬

“It’s been a great program that’s connected me to someone knowledgeable in a high level of science who I’ve been able to consult with questions about a number of topics, most importantly that being topics about the biology program itself.”

💬

“BUDR is really helpful and practical for students hoping to gain more resources or information about doing research.”

💬

“I have some other BIPOC friends in this who are taking advantage of the micro-experiences, and even though I’m not since I already work in a lab, I still feel as though BUDR has a lot to offer in terms of building that support network and sense of community in bio, which I feel can often times be missing.”

💬

“This program has enhanced my UBC experience because it allowed for connections to be made and available options for future programs or opportunities. It’s a very resourceful program with a great environment for people to come together and share experiences and ideas.”

💬

“I learned about Work Learn, several abroad programs, cold emailing and more which I wouldn’t have been exposed to elsewhere”

💬

“My mentor was amazing! He was engaged and helped me so much in speaking with my lab director and my expectations for entering a new lab. I usually am hesitant to join mentorship programs as I’m not good with speaking my needs, however, my mentor was perfect! He assisted me with everything I need.’

💬

“I would recommend the BUDR program because it is a good opportunity to meet with people with similar interests or experiences. It helps you create a community to which you feel safe as it is hard to create such during university. Moreover my mentor was wonderful and kind hearted. They were willing to help us in any situation and ensure we had the right resources for it. Additionally it can be an introduction into research if you are able to volunteer for your mentor or get into the micro-experience. It adds to your experiences as a student and allows for minority groups to be represented well in all fields of study. It also encourages us as students to speak out and make sure that everyone feels welcome and accepted in all academic scenarios and that no one is at a disadvantage because of race, gender, mental health, or disability.”

💬

“I would recommend this program because it is a welcoming experience for students. It’s a great program for networking and meeting new people! You make connections and share experience with people you get to meet without any judgment. There’s also access to many opportunities like lab experience and insight to a mentor’s experience that not a lot of other programs may have at hand.”
